Reflections from practice.

Selected writings by Jimmy Lee, drawn from more than three decades of leadership, coaching, facilitation and organisational-development practice.

Coach-like leadership

Coach-like leadership is not soft leadership.

Creating space for people to think does not mean avoiding standards, decisions or difficult conversations. These reflections explore leadership that combines care with candour, empowerment with accountability, and listening with clear direction.

01

Leading in Tension: The Real Work of Coach-like Leadership

Leadership rarely offers simple either-or choices. Jimmy examines the polarities leaders must hold together, including confidence and humility, empathy and candour, empowerment and accountability, and speed and patience.

02

Accountability: An Additional Perspective

A coach-like approach does not remove accountability. It strengthens it by making expectations explicit, inviting ownership, addressing gaps early and treating accountability as a relational and systemic practice.

Kindness and Niceness: A Leadership Lesson

Niceness can preserve short-term harmony while leaving important truths unspoken. This reflection reframes kindness as the courage to give honest feedback, set boundaries and hold people accountable with clarity and compassion.

Systems practice

Look beneath the presenting issue.

The first problem named is not always the real work. These pieces invite leaders and practitioners to notice patterns, relationships, roles and organisational conditions before rushing towards an individual or technical solution.

01 · Original song

Beneath the Surface

This groovy disco-pop song invites us to pause before judging the behaviour we can see. Its lyrics remind us that silence, impatience, withdrawal or complaint may carry hidden stories, pressures and struggles. Rather than rushing to rescue, judge or fix another person, the song calls leaders and fellow human beings to listen more deeply, see with kinder eyes and consider that the change needed may begin with the way we see.

Four OD Practitioner Patterns: What We See, Avoid and Choose to Name

A team may ask for alignment when the deeper issue is trust. Jimmy explores how OD practitioners notice what is happening, recognise what the system is avoiding and decide what needs to be named in service of the work.

Start Where the System Is

Meaningful change begins with the system’s present reality: its energy, history, wounds, humour and hopes. This reflection considers how meeting a system where it is creates the trust needed for honest movement.

Roles Belong to the System, Not to the Individuals Who Inhabit It

People can become trapped in predictable roles created by the system around them. Viewing roles systemically helps teams depersonalise tension, understand recurring dynamics and take collective responsibility for changing them.

Transitions

Preparing for the next curve.

Change is an event; transition is the human process of letting go, living through uncertainty and taking up a new beginning. These reflections explore how people and organisations can meet that in-between space with greater awareness and purpose.

01

Resistance or Transition? Building the BRIDGE

What appears to be resistance may be a person working through transition. Jimmy explores how leaders can understand the neutral observers of change and build a bridge from uncertainty towards meaningful participation.

02 · Original song

Here. Between. There.

This original song explores the inner journey of transition through three meaningful places. Here honours who we have been and gives an ending the time it deserves. Between holds the uncertainty, letting go and learning through which deeper transformation occurs. There welcomes a new beginning, carrying forward the wisdom of yesterday with gratitude, trust and hope. Its lyrics remind us that while change shapes our circumstances, transition shapes who we become.

The Shift from Significance to Service

As life and leadership enter a new phase, fulfilment may come less from achieving more and more from enabling others to grow. Jimmy reflects on his own movement from building expertise, credibility and impact towards giving experience away through coaching, mentoring and service. The article invites us to ask not only what we can accomplish, but how what we have gained can help others step forward.

Facilitation practice

Creating conversations that generate ownership.

Facilitation is more than running an agenda. It is the practice of creating conditions in which people can listen, surface differences, make meaning together and take responsibility for what happens next.
